  • Early Readers Club - United Way of Boone County has launched the Early Readers Club to promote childhood literacy. By registering today, your preschool child or grandchild can receive 12 high-quality books a year for just $20. Scholarships are available. * Through August 1, 2009 - Summer Reading Registration begins at 9:30 am at Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library (250 N. Fifth St., Zionsville). Register for the library's summer reading program. * Tuesday, June 30, 2009 - Around the World with Magic Tree House from 1 - 1:45 pm at Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library (250 N. Fifth St., Zionsville). A weekly read-aloud story program that may allow participants, students in grades 1 - 2, to travel to all seven continents in their imagination as they listen to the tales of Jack and Annie in the Magic Tree House series of stories. * Tuesday, June 30, 2009 - Annual LHS Music Boosters Steak Fry from 5 - 7pm at the Lebanon Memorial Park Large Shelter House. The Music Boosters will serve hotdogs, ribeye sandwiches, baked beans, applesauce, chips and various desserts. A steak combo meal is $7 and a hotdog combo meal is $5.The Boone County Community Band will perform a free concert at 6 pm. All proceeds benefit the LHS Music Boosters.

* Wednesday, July 1, 2009 - Computer Class: Intro to Excel 2003 at 9:30 am in the Computer Lab at Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library (250 N. Fifth St., Zionsville). Single-session, hands-on computer class. Class size is limited to 10 students to ensure individualized instruction. Each of the three-hour sessions costs $25.50 and includes a manual. Join Debra Corn Agency, Inc. (a non-profit licensed child placing agency founded in 1986 for the purpose of preventing institutionalization of children) staff and foster families for an afternoon of fun at the park! You'll get lunch, win prizes and free raffle items, and learn about the rewarding opportunity to provide a stable and loving home for children in need.

* Saturday, August 15, 2009 - Boone County Cancer Society sponsors the Boone County Battle of the BBQ at Lebanon Memorial Park in Lebanon, Indiana. Serving time is 5-7 pm. Boone County wide participation includes "chefs" from the fire departments, police departments, city and county employees, 40 churches and civic organizations. Activities include a Corn Hole Toss Tournament with trophies and prizes, a live band, games for children and lots of great food all for $10. 100% of money collected goes to Boone County cancer patients and their families. * Sunday, August 16, 2009 - Community Garage Sale from 11am-4pm at Congregation Shaarey Tefilla (3085 West 116th St. Carmel, IN 46032). Rain date is August 23. One last chance to clean out those closets. Congregation Shaarey Tefilla will offer parking lot spaces to anyone who would like to sell their family treasures. Spaces will go for $15. Congregation Shaarey Tefilla will provide the adverting and you provide the treasures. Congregation Shaarey Tefilla Sisterhood will serve concessions all afternoon. Vendors welcome. The annual Fall Festival will consist of a parade (Kiwanis Club), entertainment, carnival, food court, commercial tent, outside commercial spaces, arts and crafts tent, outside arts and crafts spaces, kids corner, pet pavilion, fireworks and more. * Saturday, September 12, 2009 - 56th Annual Zionsville Kiwanis Fall Festival Parade “It’s easy being 'Z’green” starts at 10:45 am from Zionsville Community High School. The one mile route proceeds down Mulberry Street to Ash then Main Street, and ends at Pine Street. The Parade is held in association with the Zionsville Lions Club's Fall Festival. * Saturday & Sunday, September 26 & 27, 2009 - Introduction to the Defensive Pistol - the Boone County Sheriff Department will offer a 16 hour course to qualified applicants. It will be held at the Boone County Sheriff Firearms Range in Lebanon, IN. This course is designed for the novice to the experienced male or female firearms owner. Requirements include either a valid Indiana Firearms Permit or Criminal History Report verifying the student as a "Proper Person," eye and hearing protection, a suitable pistol, approximately 400 rounds of ammunition, and tuition of $175.

* Saturday, October 17, 2009 - Zionsville Education Foundation "Oktoberfest" from 6:30 to 11 pm at the Robert Irsay Pavilion (116th & Ditch Road, Carmel). ZEF supporters gather to dine, play games and participate in a silent auction all while supporting the teachers and students in our schools. Last year, Oktoberfest netted over $26,000 to fund classroom innovation. Please join us again, invite a new friend or two and help us promote academic excellence!
